A marathon can be a great opportunity to include the entire family. For a couple, training together can build a unique bond and create the opportunity for mutual encouragement. For families that include children, here are a few tips on getting the whole family involved.

If a child is still young enough to ride in a running stroller, then there is the option to train and complete the marathon while pushing the stroller. Remember, learning to provide for your child’s needs during the event will require some practice. If you train as you intend to race, then you will be ready to change diapers or take care of necessary feedings during the projected multiple hours of the run.

For older children, there is always the option to plan on running the entire event together. However, be realistic in your assessment of the abilities of your child’s fitness level. You do not want to cause injuries that will rob the event of its enjoyment. Another viable option is to plan for your children to meet you at every refreshment station along the marathon route. This will increase the participation for them, beyond watching, and will also provide you with additional motivation.
